Perceptions: Mistrust Seen as Barrier to Blood Donation

Mistrust of hospitals is high among African-Americans, a new study suggests, offering a possible explanation for the group’s historically low rate of blood donation.
The study, published in the medical journal Transfusion, surveyed 930 African-Americans attending 15 churches in metropolitan Atlanta. One in five said they did not trust hospitals, and they were less than half as likely as the others to be blood donors. The respondents who did trust hospitals were more knowledgeable about the blood supply and less fearful of donation, and they were more likely to respond to calls for blood donation, the study found.
While 42 percent of white adults aged 25 to 44 donated blood from 1985 to 2002, only 29 percent of African-Americans did, according to the National Survey of Family Growth.
“Trust is the big barrier, and distrust is high,” said the new paper’s senior author, Dr. Beth H. Shaz, chief medical officer of the New York Blood Center in New York. “There are a lot of myths that go around; there are still people who believe you can get H.I.V. from donating blood.”
