"Textracted" Driving

Read the following story from the NY Times and this one from the AdCouncil .Also watch the two videos. Which type of tactic works better? Why or why not? What could be done differently to make the message more effective?

  1. I think that both tactics are strong and very clear. I think scaring teens into being safer drivers is a good idea because teens now adays only seem to learn the hard way that their actions do have consquences. It may seem a little extreme to most and at time a little bit harsh but they have a right to know the truth. Driving is a HUGE responsibliy, driving recklessly can result in the ulitimate horror..death. So showing the truth is always right. While telling teens to let their friends not to drive recklessly is also important, its not to relaible. Alot of teens simply dont take it serious enough to tell them anything. teens arnt known for their common sense and clear thhinking. They tend to go along with their friends and not question their saftey. They dont know how bad thins can really get, and if they do, they neve think it could happen to them. They dont know that even the most skilled driver at an instance of distraction could be wiped of the street. I think it should be given at schools or a required veiw to get your permit. I think they simply NEED to be SHOWN the risk of what they could end updoing not just told about it. DRIVE SAFE GUYS!!! :D

  2. The type of tactics that work better I believe are the ones that have your friends telling you to stop getting to text while driving. But also scaring the teens can help to. But the friend has to yell at you while you are texting or just don’t shut up to get the teen to stop or anyone. Because it is horrible to do texting while driving, it can cause very bad accidents. What you can do to make it more effective is make the laws very strict and scare the teens with it. Or even make phones in every car now that you don’t have to take your eyes off of the road.

  3. I think that the tactic using the girls in the car was more effective because this shows everyhting that will happen if you get into a car accident. I think that the other message wasn't effective because it was all about telling your friends not to text and drive knowing that if you do that your friend will not listen to you. The NY Times story was better because this can really happen in life. You can kill your friends and do more harm to yourself and I think the other one was less realistic because no person will tell their friends to stop txting while driving because that is their transportation at the time. Teens or any age these days do a lot of things that they are not aloud to so just telling a person and watching a video can cahgne the minds of many people that drive today.

  4. I think the commercial with the girls in the car is more effective. I say this because it actually gets your attention with the car crashes and the graphic views about what happen to the passengers and drivers. The other tactics I think get your attention but not as much as this one. For example, the other commercial when the old guy was in the back talking about how he would haunt the driver if he crashed and killed him. To me it seemed as if that was more of something to make you laugh rather than focus on the main situation which is testing and driving. In my opinion I think all commercials or adds about texting and driving should be very serious with graphic details about the possibilities so people can know what actually can happen.

  5. I say the commercial from the Welsh was better. It was very real and made you think. The other commercial had humor in it and if you get in an accident there wont be anything funny about it. The Welsh ad showed how your life could change by the girl losing close friends and also the little girl lost her parents and that will change her life. The commercial was very graphic but that would be the only way to get the point across to people how dangerous it is to text and drive. I bet that after that commercial people would still text and drive because they think they great drivers.

  6. I think the tactic of the violent video works better than all of the other tactics. This method tends to grab the viewers attention and it sends a straight clear message that texting while driving is very dangerous. This video showed you what could happen and what has happened to those unlucky few who chose to look at a screen instead of watching the road. The short ad didn’t really well, it was pretty funny. The short film/ad wasn’t really informative about the opinion on texting while driving. It actually made it seem like it was an alright maybe fun thing to do, but the longer ad made you NOT want to ever try texting or even thick about using you’re mobile phone on the road. To make the short message/ad more...what’s the word, more serious, they should’ve showed him actually getting in some kind of crash. Then that could’ve made it also more believable because it was just funny to me. The longer message/ad was more of an O WOW moment; more realistic. You’d start thinking about if that could really happen to you and it’ll change your opinion on the whole thought of even wanting to do it.

  7. The tactic which is grim would seem to be the better choice to get people to stop texting while driving because it shows exactly what can happen, it’s a harsh reality. The other video seemed like more of a joke therefore some people may not take it seriously at all. I think for someone to take car crashes serious they would really have to see the aftermath of one. The first video has made their message very clear as to what happens when you texting or doing something that may cause a crash. As for the second video they need to make it serious like they have to get the point across in a way that will grab the viewer’s attention. Like they have to show what’s real and making it seem like a joke isn’t the way to do it. The way I see it people don’t know the harsh reality until they’ve witnessed it or have somehow been affected by it. To get people to take things like this seriously you have to be serious about.

  8. I think the first tactic works better than the second one. I say this because making dangerous things funny is really not getting the point across and if it’s funny it’s just making you laugh it’s not making you think about the consequences of the actions you may take. I also think that the first tactic is better than the second one because things that look like reality may shock you or scare you more and it makes you more aware of the things you do that you shouldn’t be doing. I think the first tactic is better than the second one because it is more likely to happen. Some things that could be done to get the point across more is give statistics or data to back up how many teenagers actually get in crashes while on their phones. I also think something else they could do is showing the consequences that a person would have to suffer if it would happen besides killing strangers and their friends. Like maybe show that they could end up in jail or that they would be depressed 24/7.

  9. I feel that the Wales video is a better way in getting the point across about not texting while driving. Texting while driving is a serious problem and can be extremel dangerous. I feel that to prove a point you sometimes must go to the max to get that point across. I feel that the wales video does just that. It showed a typical young person driving and texting during the same time. She crashed into another car which killed her friends. It also killed the other people she hit which shows how texting while driving can not only put your life in danger but also the other civilians on the road.

  10. I believe that when you are talking about such a serious situation you should have a serious commercial or video to show the point you are trying to make. You can send a serious message by a funny commercial or video. For an example texting while driving is dangerous and I think the first websites showed that the result of you texting and driving can be very divesting and the second website showed more of a joke video. This is a very serious situation and need to be treated like one. If people want to get the message to be for teenage, show them how serious it could be, how it could change your life forever.

  11. I think the tactic of the more dramatized video works better than the one created by the Americans. I believe that by showing what can actually happen while texting in drive was a better message than just one of your passengers telling you that they think u is a bad driver. By showing this it make people think twice about what they do behind the wheel when you put so many other lives at risk. I think nothing should be changed about the dramatized video. It showed what the majority of teenagers do when they drive because they feel the need to stay connect while doing something that can become very dangerous as seen in the video clip. As for the American video I believe that it should have showed more consequences because this is something that is commonly popular among American citizens.

  12. I think the PSA tactic with the teen girls is more effective than the amusing PSA. The more serious one had the most significance and it would make teenagers more cautious of what they are doing on the road. The amusing PSA tactic may has a serious message but I don’t think teenagers would take it that serious. The one with the car accident was more effective because it shows the somber consequences of texting and driving. The video makes people not just teenagers more aware of their surrounding on the road. A person can just be texting a message that says “hi” and in that split second an accident could occur, and possibly kills everyone in the vehicle at that time. In order for the PSA tactic with the teenage girls to be more effective they should have shown the legal and emotional consequences for the girl that killed her two friends and the people in the other vehicle.

  13. i think that both tactics work but i feel that the one with the girls in it may catch someones attention more than the other one because it seems real. any human being that watches that video would forever and always think twice about texting and driving if they were smart. most people would say that they don't want to happen them. they wouldn't want to go through as much trauma and mental destruction as that girl went through. they wouldn't want to have to go explain to those kids parents why they are dead. i definitely don't think that they would want to explain to those young children why their parents are not waking up. that would destroy a person inside so im sure they would think twice about texting and driving, and if they still want to do it then at least don't do it while other people are in the car because then there lives are in your hands. that is not something you would want to live with for the rest of you miserable pathetic horrible lives. you wouldn't be able to handle it.

  14. I think that the violent way works the best because people would take that one more seriously. The funny one would just entertain people and they wouldn’t actually sit down and think about the consequences that would occur when you text and drive. With the serious and gruesome ad it is a better chance that people would sit and think about what could happen when they do that because they show you a visual of what could possibly happen, when texting and driving goes to the extreme worst case scenario. To make the message more effective, there should be ways to prevent this at the end of the ad like one of the articles said this could maybe prevent people from texting and driving as often as they used to.

  15. I believe that the british video worked better than the american video. The british video contained, blood, vilence, loud and scary sound affects and images. The police were involved and the helicopter. The scenery seemed very real and very visual. The american video was more funny than scary. It had people joking around about dying, it couldnt havee been taken seriously. I strongly believe that the british video has a stronger and longer affect on the viewers who watch it. I wouldnt add anything else to the british texting while driving video. on the other hand for the american texting while driving video i would show the person texting then i would show what the outcome of texting while drving could be. Making the situation look as real as possible and making it known that it could be anyone in that situation can make the video more effective.

  16. In my opinion I think the more scary tactics are more effective because it instills fear in its viewer. I know after watching the first video I would think twice before texting and driving. The second video wasn’t nearly as effective. It was way too sarcastic for me so I couldn’t take it serious at all. Honestly I just laughed it off. I don’t think anyone after viewing that video would stop texting because it didn’t open their eyes to what could happen when you text and drive. I think it’s better to have blood and gore because it catches the viewer’s attention and shows them the horrible outcomes of a situation that doesn’t seem as bad as first. Instead of holding back and not showing all the blood, guts, and gore you should show it because that’s reality; things like that can happen. We can’t be blind to the fact that those things are occurring because we are making stupid decisions.

  17. First I was so shocked yet not surprised. The tactic that works better is the video like the one they show on the web. The 3 girls in the car and 2 died only one survived. Not only scares us, it also let us know that this can happen to us. The accidents that occur we can become victims if we keep texting while driving. In the other article when they give statistics it is really scarring as to the number of teens that are in car accidents. NHTSA data shows that, on average, more than 300,000 teens are injured in car crashes each year. On the other hand, they say nearly 8,000 teens are involved in fatal crashes. These statistics are very alarming. One thing we have to know us teens is that we can be one in those 8,000 if we don’t drive safely. More than 3,500 teens are killed in road crashes. The research also show that teen drivers are involved in more than five time as many fatal crashes as adults. Young drivers are more likely to speed, run red lights, make illegal turns and die in an SUV rollover. We have the freedom to drive but we have to be careful so that it’s not that freedom that ends our life. If you’re in a car and the driver is driving recklessly, make sure to speak up so you don’t end up being a victim. Most importantly, drive safe and don’t talk and text. The way this message was shown was perfect, it only not tells me not to text while driving, but it also taught me the consequences that happens if I drive and text.

  18. I think that when trying to get to people especially teenagers; advertisements need to scare them off otherwise they will not learn. By using humor in ads people will just think that it is ok to just laugh it off and not get the message which could potentially cause more accidents. The ad that got to me the most was the one from England because it showed the consequences of texting while driving. This really made me think about the reality and if it is really worth it to text and drive and even more when the possibility of losing your friends exists. It also showed how you not only destroy your life but also the life of many others that you could have never even imagined. The other commercial was really goofy and stupid. It made me think about how many people will ignore it right after watching it, not only does it not make sense but they are making fun out of tragedies even if that wasn’t the intention. It also annoyed me a little because they made it seem like it was alright to text and drive, they didn’t really draw much attention to the consequences. I think that to make the message of the second commercial more effective maybe there could be less humor in it (far less) because the commercial did nothing but make me feel sorry for the amount of time and money that it took to make. I also think that it could have been longer and have more information about what you can cause if you text and drive. :|

  19. I believe that the video that the Britsh made set a better example than the American video. The British video sold the audience, blood, loud sound affects and images that brought the audience back to reality. In both videos the police were involved and there. Both videos were so surreal. The American video was more of a joke. It had people casually joking around about dying, it wouldn't be taken seriously. I believe that the British video has a stronger and longer lasting affect on the audience who watched it. I wouldn't add to the British texting while driving video. The American texting while driving video I would show the person texting then I would show what the outcome of texting while drving could be. Making the situation seem more surreal and more attentive to the audience, so people know the outcome of what happens inreal life.

  20. I think the image of the girls in the car would work better because it shows what would really happen. It may seem pretty bad but the truth is the truth. The other one was kind of stupid. After that one you just know that people would automatically forget about it. The first one could grab peoples attention and really make you think about what could happen to you in that situation. The statistics were also very alarming. When you hear about that type of stuff it doesnt really seem like its true. It seems like those statistics are exxagerated but this stuff happens all the time.

  21. My three favorite brains were Alissa's, Claudia and Wanda's. I liked Alissa's because hers was really creative. I liked how she broke the brain apart and you could view the inside. I also liked Wandas because it was good illustration. Lastly I liked Claudia's because her powerpoint was facted filled.
