Good Morning,
I'm sure there is something for everyone as we look at learning and memory. There are three articles I'd like you to read. They're all pretty short and they're all about learning. Be sure to keep your comments about them to 15 lines. When you are finished, please spend the time working on something else.
Here are the links and have a good day. See you Thursday.

“Drilling”, in some cases is a good thing in my opinion. Drilling has its bad affects and good affects to people. Drilling can cause a kid/student to want to drop out. The difficultly of the task at hand from people drilling, can cause a “non want” of learning. Giving up may seem like their only action. In a good way, drilling can be really useful and helpful when helping kids learn and adapt to what they need to soak in. Even though it may be a harsh, uninteresting way to learn, it is also very informative. Sleep is really critical when you talking about the brain. In my opinion I don’t think that you really need to nap or sleep to grabs the full intent of learning a new task. When you learn something, it just absorbs into your brain. It may take a minute to bring it out, but it’s in there and ready when you need it. I agree with the fact that your brain does learn things when you are playing a video game, and your vision could improve because of the fast motion of the game. They say playing video games may be able to help with people who have lazy eyes. Sometimes, playing a video game can help you deal with real life situations.
ReplyDeleteIn the first article i found that there are really never bad students, but bad teacher. I found that in this article the word "drill" became a popular term to show bad teaching because keeps students antisocial and unimaginable because teachers just cannot sit a student at a computer and have them to drills all day because it is taking away some social skills.
ReplyDeleteIn the second article i found that the brain is always working and at points when it is at rest it is like idling and engine, "nothing is goin on under the hood." When the brain is at rest is when the memory and learning actually starts to occur.
In the third article i found that people are saying that violent video games sare harming our students and younger childrens cahnce of learning things because it is harming their brain cells.
I think that teachers shouldn’t drill student to learn something. Sometimes when you force something on a student it may feel as if they are being pressured to learn something. Drilling students may actually cause them to learn less than when they practice a thing over a period of time. In certain cases you have to drill students to learn because it is the only option for them. Sleep is important to remember information. While you are sleeping, your brain is still working. When you learn something new it goes straight into your brain you may not see it or use it right away but it is there when you need it. Video game scan also help learn coordination. Video games can also help with your eye sight.
ReplyDeleteThe article about drilling is interesting to me because it seems like no one would actually learn anything from that method of teaching, but they do. It makes me wonder if I would be able to learn from that method as well. It sort of intrigued my mind as to if the way one learns helps them achieve more than another student would if they learned a different way or what. In the second article I found it weird that when you learn something and then take a nap you remember it better because I thought that taking a nap would make you forget what you learned. The last article about the video games was about things that I already knew because I knew that playing video games could help you succeed.
ReplyDeleteThe first article talks about drilling, basically you are using drills to see what the student has learned and how fast they can answer the questions such as math drills you should know all the answer’s automatically. Drilling can also have its down sides, drilling can take away the motivation of the students. When it comes to learning sleep plays a very important part. If a person doesn’t get enough sleep then they may lose focus and won’t really take in the lesson. After learning a lesson by taking a nap, it helps you to remember it better then not napping. Video games can help to improve your vision and other functions of the brain. When you play the kill or be killed games it improves your peripheral vision. Even if games can have a good affect on people, they can also have bad affects people start to think that life if a video game and they are the characters in them.
ReplyDeleteIn this first article they are talking about how it is not the students that are bad it is the teachers that are bad. In this article it is talking about the word “drill”, like what the meaning is. The term is to show bad teaching because it keeps students antisocial and unimaginable because teachers just cannot sit a student at a computer and have them to drills all day because it is taking away some social skills.
ReplyDeleteThe second article is talking about the brain. It is saying that the brain is always working and at points when it is at rest it is like idling and engine, "nothing is going on under the hood." When your brain is at rest, is when the memory and learning starts to began.
The third article is talking about the bad and scary video games. It is saying how the kids are not learning do to the games they play. They are more worried about the bad games and not learning. Kids are paying attention to the games and not learning.
That is what all three article are all about.

ReplyDeleteI think that we can learn in any way we want. For some people the drilling may work while for some others the gaming may help. This just proves that learning is about feeling comfortable and getting to the point. I think that it is very nice to discover new ways to learn and gain knowledge, which can increase our chances of providing support for people to make it easier for them to learn. To me, this means that even people with learning disabilities can be provided with support to live normally and learn in innovative ways. It is an opportunity to advance and create new jobs and industries focusing on learning and promoting new ways of learning. Drilling does not really work because the students have less freedom and it seems as if they are just memorizing things rather than learning and interpreting them in more than one way. Drilling just seems like a way to get the teaching over with no matter how much or how little progress there is. Meanwhile, gaming (violent) helps visualize things and develop coordination. The only similarity is that they are ways to learn but it does not mean that they are effective and get to the point of teaching right, or to get the student to understand… :D
ReplyDeleteI think drilling has bad affect on kids in school. I could possibly get to the point when they want to drop out. When it comes to sleeping, this is very critical for the brain. If someone does not get enough sleep their brain will not function. This makes it difficult to learn. When I’m in school and I’m tired I don’t understand anything. I agree and disagree about the fact that you learn while playing the video game. When I play I learn the controls about the video game but if something is said to me I don’t comprehend it. That’s why I get in trouble so much when I play the game because my mom thinks I’m ignoring her.
ReplyDeleteThe three articles that I read all focus on different forms of learning. In the first article it talked about drilling educational information in student’s heads so they can remember succeed. Many think it is okay to make students constantly repeat task to get a better understanding of their assignments and class’s. The second article talked about sleep and how it helps improve learning abilities. When people forget things it usually means they lack sleep and the brain did not fully process everything they learned, versus people who actually receive rest. The brain works even when the body is resting and little naps throughout the day could help a person retain more information. The third article focused on video games and how they could be educational. They can also help children’s or adult’s hands and eye coordination. Beveller said in the article that “playing the kill-or-be-killed games can improve peripheral vision and the ability to see objects at dusk, and the games can even be used to treat amblyopia, or lazy eye, a disorder characterized by indistinct vision in one eye”. Even though these games could possibly be beneficial in some ways not all people are fans of the sex and violence incorporated in them. Gavin McKiernan is concerned with the messages in the game and the violence in the game will eventually affect its gamers. There are many different ways of learning and retaining information, people just have to find out what is best for them.
ReplyDeleteThere are no bad students, there are bad teachers. If I student doesn't understand something it is not a student's fault. A teacher should take that upon themself to find a way to help the student comprehend. Drills are not the solution. Sitting a student down at a computer doing drills does not help. The brain is always working even when you are at rest. During your resting time the memory and learning occur. Studies show that violent games are not good for kids. It can influence them to do violent things and it is bad for their brain cells.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of “drilling” was very interesting to me. In my opinion I feel as though teachers shouldn’t drill students to learn something because then you run into the problem of rebellion. Drilling can have its positive and negatives however. Drilling can take away the motivation factor in students. It also could take away from children’s social skills. Learning is about really understanding and taking your time to. I also found it weird that if you take a nap you will remember things better, but while you are sleeping your brain is still working. When you learn something new it goes straight to your brain. Even though you might not use it, it will be there when do in fact need it.
ReplyDeleteDrilling is a bad thing in my opinion. I guess the more you forces and pressure education upon students the more they are likely drop out. It might discourage them to continue with education. But it can also help the kids by keeping them busy and off the streets. On the other article they said playing video games improve eye vision and other function. They also have better attention, better cognition. They also say that people who play pre social games are more likely to help others in situations such as harassments. Math can improve performance and other brain tasks. Games test your memory skills, your eye-hand coordination, and your ability to detect small activities on the screen and interact with them. Going back to the first article, the way a teacher sell’s his or her lesson helps the students to learn better. For example if the teacher just give lectures everyday and don’t have an activity to help the students but on the other hand gives the student 3-4 homework every day, the students are not going to learn well. Teachers should not drill the lesson upon the students but they should find a way to help the student to learn. Students don’t learn faster or better through pressure. Video games can be helpful, but in my opinion I believe that it can be harmful because the kids can be addicted to video games which can lead them to not do their school work. They even believe that video games will become part of our curriculums
ReplyDeleteIn this article i learned that there is never a bad student, if there is a bad student it is becuase of a bad teachers. Teachers dont take the time to make up different ways that students can learn something for an example students who learn by hand on activities instead of lecutures. Also in this article is talks about drills. drills do not work what so ever. sitting at a computer all day doesnt mean that the student is actually learning anything. in math class when we do onlines before learning the lesson i dont get how we are suppose to get a good grade if we never learned it.
